newer yellow model will not inflate a car tire!
I bought two of these a couple of years ago at Sam's Club for me and my wife. It was the black-colored model. It has saved us a couple times and I liked them so much...I bought one for each of my friends families thinking it to be a great gift idea... The newer ones are a molded bright yellow color. Well... good luck inflating a car tire with the newer model. My dad tried and I thought he must be using it wrong...so I tried and failed as well. It looked by the gauge as if his tire already held 80lbs of pressure! I knew that was not correct and upon closer inspection it turns out the newer inflator hose fittings are defective. I had the unique opportunity to directly compare the fitting to my two year old black model from the same company...and if you look closely at the tire inflator fitting on the end of the hose you can see where, on the older model, a metal piece (yes real metal!) was engineered into the fitting to assure that the plastic pin is pushed forward enough into the tire air valve to allow for proper inflation. This piece of metal is missing from my dads...so I looked at the one I got for my sister (also newer yellow model)... yes, you guessed it. No piece of metal... no way it will inflate a tire. Period. I have not looked at all the others I bought as presents over Christmas, but I bet if I get the chance they will be defective too. Moral of the story, beware the yellow model. I have sent an email to Vector about it and so far, no reply.

Nice idea - could be better quality
Unit seems to operate ok except that the clamps don't fit into the tight space around the battery posts in my car. I have an older Schumacher charger with much smaller clamps that fit everywhere...these folks could learn from that.
Also, the instruction manual seems like it was originally written in some other language and translated into English. It's spotty in details and I seem to get items on the unit's display that aren't at all documented in the manual.

Horribly built, DON'T BUY!
This piece of equipment worked really well as far as juicing up the battery when it's dead, and it's really easy to charge and use. Problem is, after I had used it a couple times, the cheapo plastic clamps BOTH SNAPPED. Now they can't grip on the battery terminals. Under warranty, but so expensive to ship (shipping not covered by warranty) that it isn't worth it. Great idea, shoddy construction. ALL VECTOR have these same plastic clamps, so try to find one with metal clamps.

Got our neighbour to work!
Unlike the other reviewer, we have had no problems with our unit. We have owned it for one year, used it to inflate several car tires, and to start our neighbour's car one frosty morning. She had left her headlights on over night and came over for a boost to get to work. Instead of driving my car over, I grabbed the Vector. She was clearly suspicious, but also clearly thrilled when her car started immediately. The unit could not, however, start a 1985 305 V8 (carb) with a totally dead battery, but it rates fewer cranking amps than the car requires. It should easily handle anything up to a fuel injected V6, and perhaps new fuel injected V8s as well. If in doubt, compare its cranking amps to the minimum for your car before buying.
We also hooked it up to an inverter and powered a 25" television for an hour. Not bad if the power goes out. Can be recharged in a running car.

Don't waste your money
I purchased this item for my husband last Christmas, and the air hose cracked and started leaking air. He swapped mine for his, since he had had a tire that was losing air, and we both drive a distance to work. Anyway, I am purchasing another soon, but DEFININTELY NOT ANOTHER one like this. It did work for a SHORT time, and that's why it's getting two stars instead of one.
