Pytor Illych Tchaikovsky: The Nutcracker - Complete Ballet
: :Although Gergiev is highly experienced in the theater, and he is leading an opera-ballet orchestra, this is definitely a concert Nutcracker. Tempos are brisk, textures streamlined, and dancers might have a good deal of difficulty keeping up with the music. For us home listeners, though, this is a superb way to hear Tchaikovsky's complete score and to remind ourselves of how much good music isn't included in the familiar suite. Gergiev justifies his reputation as an interpreter and as an orchestra leader, getting amazingly precise playing from the ensemble. Best of ...

Pytor Il'ich Tchaikovsky: Pique Dame
from: Philips
: essential recording:The Queen of Spades was the opera that won Tchaikovsky the most popular acclaim in his lifetime, and with good reason. It's a powerfully dramatic story that offered the composer some irresistible opportunities. The Rococo setting encouraged Tchaikovsky to have a lot of fun in writing fake classical period dance and vocal music. But into this light-hearted and elegant atmosphere, the story itself presents the darkest possible picture of pathological obsession--with sex, gambling, money--all those juicy items that great opera seems best able to express. Tchaikovsky certainly rose to ...

Prokofiev: The Complete Symphonies
from: Philips
: : It should come as no surprise that Gergiev is in his element in Prokofiev's symphonies. Whatever his failings in other repertory, he's always had a knack for visceral excitement in Russian music, sometimes at the expense of lyric or lighter moments. And so it is here. Gergiev is a bit heavy-handed in the popular Classical Symphony, Prokofiev's homage to Haydn and Mozart. But he delivers high-octane power in the three steel-age symphonies that follow (the set is especially notable for the inclusion of both versions of the Fourth). The popular ...
