Editorial Review:

Amazon.com:
A tale about a fatherless boy finding dramatically different father figures throughout a remarkable adventure, Treasure Island is an entertaining coming-of-age story, with themes of family, loyalty, friendship, trust, and honesty at its core. While Robert Louis Stevenson's classic adventure tale is popular film fare, it's never been done this well. Charlton Heston stars as Long John Silver and Christian Bale as plucky Jim Hawkins in this TNT production. Directed by Heston's son Fraser (who also directed the excellent family fare Alaska), the film remains faithful to the novel, and draws much of the spirit and excitement of the book. The action scenes are first-rate, and if the ship Hispaniola has never looked better or more authentic, no surprise: the ship is the original from 1962's Mutiny on the Bounty. The opening scenes are dark and rich, as they capture the period well, with careful attention to makeup (the teeth, the body grime!) and costuming. Oliver Reed and Christopher Lee are frighteningly effective as Capt. Billy Bones and Blind Pew, and the film's first half-hour is theirs. The tone shifts and lightens when Heston appears as the legendary pirate. Look for Pete Postlethwaite, Julian Glover, and Richard Johnson in wonderful supporting roles. The film marks Bale's segue from poignantly promising child actor (Empire of the Sun) to compelling teen (he would later continue to prove his talent as a versatile young actor in Little Women and Velvet Goldmine). --N.F. Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The best Treasure Island movie ever made!
This is indeed the very best film version of Robert Louis Stevenson's definitive pirate adventure ever made. Christian Bale plays the young Jim Hawkins and Charlton Heston is Long John Silver, and both are excellent. Add Christopher Lee as Blind Pew and the rest of a terrific cast including Oliver Reed, Clive Wood, and Julian Glover among the many actors that bring the story to life. Filmed on location in Jamaica and on the awesome ship Hispaniola, the scenery and cinematography are marvelous.

And the soundtrack is performed by The Cheiftains!
It is the best pirate soundtrack ever, adding great drama and realism to the proceedings, since the music seems so timely for the period.

Heston's Long John Silver is sensational, and his son Fraser's direction is action packed but not overbearing. My family has watched this movie at least 20 times, and we are wearing out our VHS tape. Please release this on DVD right away so I can buy multiple copies as gifts.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Needs to be on DVD
This is one of the best versions of "Treasure Island". It has a really wonderful cast with Charlton Heston, Oliver Reed, Christopher Lee and Christian Bale. To whom it may concern: please put this on DVD, nice extras would be commentary with Lee, Bale and director Fraser Heston.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Treasure Island (1990)
This should have been a better production for all the money and big stars involved. Not sure why it came out so mediochre.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Absolutely love it!
This is a wonderful film with the incredible actor Charlton Heston. The music is incredible, the acting is great, the shot-on-location scenery is perfect. I have seen other versions and this is by far my favorite.

Sales of semiconductors in November indicate that consumer products such as LCD (liquid crystal display) TVs, digital music players, and other devices sold well during the holidays, the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) said Monday.

November chip sales rose 2.3 percent year-on-year to $23.1 billion, the SIA said.

Unit demand has far outpaced last year. But falling chip prices have hurt industry revenue, the chip association said. For example, DRAM (dynamic RAM) bit shipments grew 25 percent in the three months through mid-December, but average selling prices have declined 20 percent over the same period.

The association also noted that rising energy prices and concerns about the sub-prime lending issue in the U.S. do not appear to have had a significant impact on consumer spending for the holidays, the SIA said. The group reiterated its forecast that worldwide semiconductor sales will reach a new record in 2007. But it will take a stronger than expected December selling season to reach the 3.8 percent growth goal the group had forecast earlier this year, the SIA said.

Investment banking firm Credit Suisse was not as optimistic as the SIA.

The November data was below normal seasonal trends, noted analyst John Pitzer, in a report on Monday. Even if December reaches its normal seasonal growth, 2007 industry revenue will only reach $255.7 billion, up 3.2 percent over last year. The growth percentage would fall short of the SIA's 3.8 percent target.

The slow November prompted Credit Suisse to lower its 2008 chip industry revenue forecast to 9.4 percent year-on-year growth, down from a previous target of 13 percent.
