30th Anniversaire
: essential recording:Abandoned as a baby and raised in a brothel, Piaf was dicovered singing in the streets of Paris by a club owner, who started her 30-year career during which time she became France's best-loved and best-known songstress, with major hits from beginning to end. At times singing in front of the band with no microphone, her powerful voice and emotional delivery was a striking contrast to her diminutive size. Nicknamed 'the Little Sparrow,' Piaf was plagued by controversy, from implications in a clubowner's death to multiple affairs (including Yves ...

Christmas Sing-Along with Mitch
: :A family tree-trimming classic if ever there was one, this collection by chorale leader Mitch Miller is timeless--and (relatively) schmaltz-free! On Christmas Sing-Along, Mitch & the Gang stick primarily to the religious aspects of the holiday, with traditional favorites like 'Joy to the World,' 'What Child Is This,' and 'We Three Kings.' There is, however, a rousing version of 'Deck the Halls,' but if you're looking for more commercially oriented tunes like 'Must Be Santa,' you'll have to check out Mitch's other holiday collections (including Holiday Sing-Along). As with most of ...

Dean Martin - All-Time Greatest Hits
: :Curb Records has long specialized in low-budget repackagings of previously released material, and they certainly haven't gone out of their way with this 12-song Dean Martin compilation. Culled from his Capitol years, this does indeed feature some great moments--'That's Amore,' 'Volare,' 'Inamorata' and 'Come Back to Sorrento' are all present and accounted for--and if you need a little Dino to spruce up a mix tape, this'll certainly do ya. However, Collectors Series offers much more bang for your buck, even if it costs a few extra dollars. --Dan Epstein

A Star Is Born
from: Sony
: :Hollywood loved this story so much they remade it every 20 years or so for much of the 20th century; Barbra Streisand imbued it with so much forceful persona in 1976 that they haven't touched it since. The romantic/musical pairing of Streisand and Kris Kristofferson (chosen when no less than Elvis Presley turned the role down) may have been one of the era's strangest but, anchored by Streisand's elegant, Oscar-winning hit theme 'Evergreen,' it nonetheless yielded the biggest-selling album of the singer's career to date. That neither star is particularly convincing ...
