Reinventing the Steel
: :Pantera's back, and all is as wrong with the world as it ever was. They're going to make sure you know it, too. Despite the four-year absence from the studio between Great Southern Trendkill and Reinventing the Steel, Pantera's unflagging aggression is confirmed by the full-throttle rhythms, throat-ripping vocals, and crunchy guitars. Call it their Metallica legacy, except that Pantera are more Metallica than Metallica these days. Heavy metal of this breed may be past its heyday, but Pantera's not going away quietly. In fact, evidence suggests that they're not going ...

Suicidal Tendencies
: :When punk rock met the formless rebellion that permeated L.A.'s working-class suburbs in the early '80s, a weird hybrid was born, drawing equally from heavy-metal thunder and Ritalin-generation aggression. Suicidal Tendencies' frontman Mike Muir was one of them, and they knew it immediately, latching onto the half-spoken, half-screeched brain bomb 'Institutionalized' as an instant classic. That song is certainly the best-known track on this, the group's debut, but it's hardly the only essential one: 'Fascist Pig,' 'I Shot the Devil,' and 'Possessed' all rage on mightily, the arcs of guitar from ...

Blood Mountain
:Album Description:The sludgy, raw and fierce Mastodon blurs the line between metal, rock and prog with their major-label debut, Blood Mountain. :You could have passed it off as a fluke. Remission was an awesome album, helping revitalize metal and bringing the band much deserved notice. Leviathan was a gigantic leap, perhaps the most ambitious metal album in years. But could it keep going? People were concerned–-side glances were given, hand wringing began as Mastodon moved to a major. And for what? Turns out for nothing. Blood Mountain is flat-out amazing. If ...

Far Beyond Driven
: :For Pantera, rage flows like water from a faucet. Far Beyond Driven vents the band's animosity in a maelstrom of hateful harangues fueled by thunderous drumbeats, piercing guitar noise, and raw-throated vocals. --Jon Wiederhorn

Inflikted
: :The Cavalera Conspiracy is about a sense of being unleashed, says vocalist/guitarist Max Cavalera. You bottle a monster for 10 years and then let it out. It s explosive, and we waited a long time for this beast to be set free. It s true. The wait is over. And the time is now. Many said it would never happen, that Max and Iggor Cavalera, the Brazilian brothers and visionaries that formed the groundbreaking metal band Sepultura in 1983 would reunite to make electrifying music together again. Despite having spent ...
