Swiss Movement: Montreux 30th Anniversary Edition

by: Les McCann, Eddie Harris

Hush

from: Sony

: :The idea here was to put two masters together--one classical cellist, one improvisational singer/sound-effects performer--and voilà! instant amazing, unique, hip--and, hopefully, hit--record. The intriguing setup was to see what would happen when each led the other through the unfamiliar territory of his own specialty. The success of this recording lies not so much in the music or even in the overall performances, but in the fascinating and fun opportunity to sit in on the musicians' good-natured, respectful give-and-take, to witness an uncommon form of artistic chemistry that allows each performer to expand his ...

The Bluegrass Sessions: Tales From The Acoustic Planet, Vol. 2

by: Béla Fleck

: 's Best of 1999 :In a jaw-dropping return to his roots, banjoist Béla Fleck led a stellar lineup (Jerry Douglas, Earl Scruggs, Tony Rice, and Sam Bush, to name a few) through one of his finest albums. With incredible musicianship and a smidgen of Fleck's genre-hopping personality ('Polka On The Banjo'), The Bluegrass Sessions is fun, nostalgic, and inspiring. --Jason Verlinde Amazon.com essential recording:Béla Fleck, the banjo-wizard leader of the fringe-jazz quartet the Flecktones, returns to more-bluegrass-oriented concerns with this 18-song outing, a complement to 1988's Drive and a more-traditional follow-up to 1995's ...

Capitol Collectors Series: Louis Prima

by: Louis Prima

: essential recording:Band leader and lounge kingpin Louis Prima will be best be known for the classic, 'Just a Gigolo,' immortalized by David Lee Roth for a whole new generation of swingers. But Prima's output went much further: in his day he recorded for Capitol, acted in a movie or two, even owned a golf course. Prima's genius is infectious: lounge, swing, and Dixieland all fuse together into medleys that are fun, dance-worthy, and upbeat. Prima's duets with Keely Smith are the obvious highlights here: 'That Ol' Black Magic,' 'Hey Boy! Hey Girl!,' ...

The Hot Fives & Sevens

by: Louis Armstrong

: :Between 1925 and 1929, Louis Armstrong created one of the first great bodies of work in jazz. While he worked regularly as a soloist with big bands, he began his career as a leader with the first all-star studio group in jazz, the Hot Five. The other four musicians were Armstrong's wife, Lil Hardin Armstrong, on piano; Johnny Dodds on clarinet; Kid Ory on trombone; and Johnny St. Cyr on banjo. The music's first great soloist, Armstrong was reshaping jazz by sheer improvisational magic, gradually diminishing the role of the traditional New Orleans ...

Dream Dancing: Songs of Cole Porter

by: Beegie Adair

: :Listeners in the thrall of the great Cole Porter's lyrical sense and legendary melodic finesse probably don't need to be prompted to pick up an album featuring new piano-trio interpretations of 14 of the master's gems. The good news though, is that Nashville pianist Beegie Adair's Dream Dancing: The Songs of Cole Porter holds up as a first-rate piano-trio record on more than just the strength of Porter's melodies (this is equally the case on her Nat 'King' Cole Collection, Frank Sinatra Collection, and even her Love, Elvis set of the King's ballads). ...

Usually we're fans of Logitech's gaming mice, but its highest-end G9 Laser Mouse is expensive, overly complex, and lacks the ergonomic thought we've come to expect. If you like to brag about dot-per-inch limits, perhaps the G9's 3,200dpi laser will be enough to sell you, but for the price, we expect the design to match.

While compact and convenient, Panasonic's SD-based SDR-S150 camcorder doesn't make the quality cut.
