Mozart: Serenade for 13 Winds 'Gran Partita'

from: Telarc

: essential recording:This familiar music has now been recorded many times, but seldom as effectively as it is here. Sir Charles Mackerras is a superb Mozartean, and this performance just brims with life. The rhythms are crisp and clearcut, the phrasing loving, and the balances consistently superb. Telarc's recording, with its lifelike presence, is another positive factor. The only possible complaint about this disc is the half hour of empty space which could have been used for more Mozart. --Leslie Gerber

Tell Her I Love Her

by: George Flynn, Katherine Fink, Gerhard R. Koch, Julie Landsman, John Moses, Virgil Blackwell, Marc Goldberg

: :Discovered singing in a noted New York City watering hole, the Syracuse native's successful major label debut quickly made him a rising star who garnered comparisons to Mario Lanza--from Tony Bennet, no less. But Amante's showy, soaring style and good looks seemed destined for a wider audience than opera's, and indeed this sophomore release largely delivers on the tenor's rich crossover potential. While many classically educated singers seem challenged to throw off the formal constraints of their rigorous training in tackling pop material, Amante's journeyman musical background has gifted him with a more ...

The Score

from: Varese Sarabande

: :Howard Shore revisits the thriller genre's enduring '70s jazz sensibility but brings to it his own modern, authoritative sense of impressionism. Centered around a simple falling six-note phrase, Shore's score weaves in some of Thomas Newman's polyrhythmic adventure and leaves just enough room for his master session men to color the proceedings with some moody soloing. It's a score whose deceptively straightforward demeanor masks some intriguing, dark corners as it steadily builds its sense of pervasive tension: the deliciously cool, yet distinctly uneasy musical underpinnings of the film's story and characters. --Jerry McCulley

Summer Shimmers

from: Koch Int'l Classics

:Album Description:When flutist Susan Glaser was contemplating a new CD of contemporary music she turned to Jennifer Higdon, one of America's most widely performed, most-recorded, and most popular composers today. Glaser was drawn to the variety and maturity of her writing. Not to mention that, not surprisingly, Higdon--who was trained as a flutist--had created a lot of pieces featuring that instrument. After delving into many scores and recordings, Glaser was so won over by Soliloquy that she decided to record an all-Higdon CD. But each and every piece here is compelling in its ...

The War That Made America: The Story of the French and Indian War

by: Brian Keane

:Album Description:Ten time Emmy winning composer and Grammy winning producer Brian Keane has crafted a unique soundtrack the PBS special, The War That Made America (The Story of the French and Indian War), a fascinating story about the foundations of America, it’s winners and it’s losers. Taking place in the middle 1700's, Keane drenches the score in the atmosphere of the 18th century by employing the instruments and music of the time period including works by Handel, French court composer Jean Baptiste Lully, and others. One notable example is a haunting rendition of ...
