Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Very Clean
September 22, 2008

I purchased this unit for my upcoming travel around the USA. I have played around with it for a week around home and I do like what I see.

The text to speech is my favorite feature. Very clear and concise.

I am looking forward to utilizing the 'Exit POI' feature which informs you just what's off those freeway exits that you cannot see unless your driving thru California or Neveda.

Will update this review as the trip unfolds.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Magellan Roadmate 1412
Not a bad unit for the price. Locked up once, not 100% accurate with streets vs. dead ends. Great for long trips, good for off-ramp services ahead.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - won't get you lost
I extensively used my companies pricier Garmin a few years ago, then bought this for myself after I changed jobs.

Two features I really miss, and feel they are not exclusive to high end models; the old Garmin said "arriving at destination ON RIGHT" (or left). This one just says "arriving at destination", so I spend more time swiveling my head around looking.

The Garmin also allowed me to program stops along the way during a route execution. The Magellan 1412 will only allow you to divert to "exit points of interests" and only along a freeway. Otherwise, if you're enroute, you have to cancel the route, search for what it is your looking for, then activate that route, then re-start your original route after. Or you can preplan it all -- as if you know ahead of time where you'll be needing to find a coffe shop on an old state road.

The "Exit POI" feature is very nice, however. How many times have you been on a long road trip and flown past an exit you thought was devoid of gas stations or restaurants because there were no signs ahead? This prevents that nicely and lets you see within 15 or so miles what is coming up along a freeway.

The POIs in the database are also pretty good-- lots more categories than I had on the older Garmin.

The battery is puny, and won't hold much of a charge. Keep the power cord close by.

The window mount is excellent -- better than the Garmin I had.

The speaker is small, and a bit hard to hear if you have a noisy car.

This one does say the name of the street-- a minimum standard in all GPS in my opinion.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - How did I ever live without a GPS?
I purchased one of the first Magellan Roadmates when they were over $1K. I truly believe having a GPS prevented me from divorce. My wife has map dislexia and frequently gave me information to exit when I was past any possibility of turning. This led to many frustrating and heated moments on the road. Maggie, as we like to call our GPS, eliminated the only source of unhappiness in our marriage.

This unit lacks one feature I liked on my original Roadmate such as the ability to select voices for male or female, US english or UK english. I liked the UK female. Other than that I think it functions wonderfully.

Some other comments discussed time for processing and accuracy of directions. Considering the amount of information and number of roads it must consider, I think it does a fantastic job. You try getting routing instructions using any method you want and see if you can do it that fast.

I have learned that accuracy is not a product of the unit but more a product of the various towns, counties, or states providing accurate data to the mapping organizations that feed the GPS providers. An example of this my local area has redesigned the on/off ramps for the Interstate. Until this gets processed via updates any out-of-towner using a GPS would likely be critical of its accuracy. I see new road construction, expansion, intersection redesign and rerouting of traffic everywhere I go. Road work never seems to stop.

The true test is whether or not the directions get you there, not if it follows a route you are familiar with. If I was finding a location for the first time I just want to get there safely and in a timely manner. This unit does that. There will always be exceptions with any GPS system but his one does the job very well. I use it almost every day, even locally but especially on long trips. You can't beat the exit POI information and the rerouting feature when on an unfamiliar highway.
