Amazon.com essential video:
Originally made for TV in 1977, this in-depth (six hours plus) version of Jesus' life is so thorough that the first hour is devoted solely to the story of his birth. The film doesn't skimp on some of the other landmark events of this famous story either. Director Franco Zeffirelli gives more than 12 minutes screen time each to the Last Supper and the Crucifixion. Passages of the Bible are quoted verbatim, the locations have a Palestine-like authenticity, and, aside from some of the principals (Robert Powell as Jesus, Olivia Hussey as Mary, and Stacy Keach as Barabbas), many of the non-Roman characters are actually played by Semitic-looking actors. Zeffirelli diligently provides the sociopolitical background that gave rise to Jesus' following and the crisis in belief it caused for the people of Israel (and one or two Romans). While not graphic by today's standards, some of the scenes--baby boys being ripped from their mothers' arms and slaughtered, nails being driven into Jesus' hands--may disturb young and/or sensitive children. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Not as biblically accurate.
This video is not as biblically accurate as I was led to believe by the other reviews. I purchased this to augment my bible study teaching so I may be a little tougher on the movie then most people. Dramatic license is taken in several places because of the need to let the viewer know some of the backround as well as the portraying of the actual incidents in Jesus' life. The movie is already 6 hours long so I can understand the necessity of this but some of decisions by the producer are almost ridiculous. Young Jesus is portrayed by a young man with blue eyes, blond hair, and the whitest skin I've ever seen on someone from the middle east. All in all though, the movie has some cool parts and is worth watching. I would recommend it.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Brilliant
Very nice interpretation of the story of Christ's life. The blue eyes of actor Robert Powell is bright, dense and expresses both compassion and suffering borne by the Passion that contributes to the brightness of this beautiful film.

"Jesus of Nazareth" has converted one of my fellow class mate. I recommend it with that of "The Passion of Christ" by Mel Gibson.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Jesus
This is the best movie on Jesus, that I have seen. I like to believe Jesus was the kind person, this actor portray`s

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - happy camper
This is one of my all time favorite movies. I'm very pleased with the purchase. Seller was accurate in discription and speedy in delivery. Would not hesitate buying from them again.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Good compilation of Gospels
The story is a compilation of several Gospels and encompases the whole of his life (per documented accounting in the bible). It is an awesome movie - despite the droning musical soundtrack. :)

This Jesus is lovely to look at, but sometimes he seems possessed and dead or wooden rather than peaceful. But, he does do wonderful justice to his peaceful, merciful and loving nature and does display some of his passionate nature.

This was my favorite all time Jesus movie until I saw the Gospel of John of the Visual Bible series which I totally recommend (narrated by Christopher Plummer)- That movie presents a Jesus who was alive, enthusiastic and had fire in him in a 100% accurate account of the Gospel.
