Bowie at the Beeb: The Best of the BBC Radio Sessions

by: David Bowie

: :Comprehensiveness isn't always a virtue, as this three-CD set proves. It gathers together everything David Bowie recorded for the BBC between the years referenced in its title, plus a third disc taken from a June 2000 London concert for the famed British radio broadcasting company. Head first to disc two, which focuses on Bowie's in-studio recreations of material from Hunky Dory and Ziggy Stardust, and marvel at the glam-rockabilly heat generated by Bowie's Spiders from Mars band. By comparison, the other two discs are a disappointment. The first reveals a musical chameleon uncomfortably ...

Wagner - Der Ring des Nibelungen (Ring Cycle) / Sawallisch, Bayerischer Staatsoper

by: Richard Wagner, Julia Varady, René Kollo, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Bayerischer Staatsoper, Marjana Lipovsek, Hildegard Behrens, Helmut Pampuch, Jan-Hendrik Rootering, Hanna Schwartz, Angela Maria Blasi, Christel Borchers, Robert Schunk, Birgit Calm, Hanna Schwarz, Waltraud Meier, Matti Salminen, Nancy Gustafson, Robert Hale, Kurt Moll

: :Those without access to video disc players can now enjoy this 1989 Ring production, although stage noises and singers husbanding their resources come off less forgivingly in an audio-only context. But the recording is surprisingly crisp and vibrant, save for distortion in loud tuttis. Wolfgang Sawallisch has a sixth sense for pacing, proportion, and keeping singers secure. A bargain worth considering, but no texts are included. --Jed Distler

The Complete Vanguard Recordings

by: Buddy Guy

: :Young man leaves impoverished home, heads out to seek fame and fortune, becomes legend. It's the stuff of myth, and it's also the tale of many a blues musician who headed north to Chicago after World War II. One such bluesman was Buddy Guy, who has achieved mainstream success beyond what most of his compatriots have, thanks to his fiery stage presence and undeniable energy that keeps going and going and going. This reissue of his sessions for Vanguard in the late 1960s and early 1970s, however, offers a different flavor; the pieces are smoother ...
