: :English composer Robert Prizeman has taken a conventional English boy's choir--usually a haven for sweet songs and ecclesiastical renderings--and made them contemporary without selling out any of their intrinsic charm. Their stacked choral voices and lead sopranos, dressed up with electronica rhythms, synthesizers, and strings still sound like they could be coming from the church balcony, even while they exude an Enya-like appeal. While there are adaptations of Gregorian chants and Sibelius hymns, most of the songs are Prizeman originals based on those styles, with texts often drawn from Latin Liturgy. ...

George Frideric Handel: Esther
from: CORO
:Album Description:Handel's oratorios vary greatly in their presentation. In many ways, Esther is a rarity;it is by far the most intimate, not surprisingly as it was composed for the Duke of Chandos. The Duke's Palladian palace near the village ofEdgware had not been completed in time for the first performance so this may have taken place (as did Acis and Galatea) in the intimate surroundings of a small church, St Lawrence, Whitchurch. We decided, therefore, that we should attempt to convey that intimacy of performance on disc; so we performed in ...

Handel - Messiah / Rodgers, D. Jones, Robson, Langridge, Terfel, Hickox
: :Something's wrong with any English group of professional singers and instrumentalists that can't work themselves up to a sensitive and idiomatic performance of Handel's Messiah, and this group certainly doesn't disappoint. However, I do think that there are performances with more personality--more of a sense of the music's grandeur (Trevor Pinnock on Archiv) or intimacy (The Sixteen on Hyperion). Mind you, there's nothing at all wrong here, and if you do opt for this team, you won't be disappointed. --David Hurwitz

Tavener - Total Eclipse · Agraphon / Rozario · Harle · Robson · Gilchrist · AAM · Goodwin
: :British composer John Tavener continues to realize his spiritual obsessions with his work Total Eclipse, given its world premiere recording here. This much-anticipated collaboration with Paul Goodwin and the Academy of Ancient Music follows Eternity's Sunrise, which was a commission by the famous Early Music ensemble to celebrate its 25th anniversary. Integral to this performance is soprano Patricia Rozario, whose experience in interpreting Tavener's 'holy minimalism' has made it almost second nature for her. Total Eclipse explores both religious and musical elements, combining them to illustrate the idea of metanoia, or ...
