Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Network sharing & extended practical experience
Network sharing & extended practical experience

We have used two MP780s units for over a year. Bang for the buck, Canon probably makes the best inkjets (all the inkjets we have ever used, including HP, have far more problems than laser printers).

Local Canon authorized service is available and has been needed twice in the first year; a 3-4 day turnaround each time. However, expensive repairs were totally covered by warranty and the units work good-as-new again. It is just a nuisance to do without it and the customer supplies transportation each way during business hours.

Given only a USB interface, sharing was a problem in a small office, thus we did not buy the MP780s until discovering the Silex Pricom C-6200U print server which acts as an ethernet node for Canon inkjets, including the MP780 and allows sharing of scanning, print & fax functions, including printer notifications, over an ethernet network.

Problems:
1. Software: Due to unclear software problems, the Pricom network setup (even though "designed in cooperation with Canon") does not support the Canon MP Navigator software interface; Canon MP Navigator reports "The printer driver supported by this software is not installed. Install it and then retry."). Neither Pricom or Canon have solved this incompatibility. However, using the Navigator software interface is optional and all other software functions work well via the Pricom unit.

2. Printhead clogging:
a. The pigmented black printhead seems to clog rather frequently, perhaps more so with compatible than OEM ink cartridges; but we are not sure there is much of a difference. If cleaning cycles do not work, then ink head cleaning using heated Windex (especially reverse flushing by sucking Windex backwards, up from a shallow dish, through the ink head with a modified syringe followed by cleaning cycles) will often clear up many problems if done soon after noting problem onset.

b. A new printhead replacement through Canon is available for ~$65.00 and covered under warranty for up to 3 years if the Canon 2 yr warranty extension is purchased directly from Canon before the 1 year warranty expires, probably well worth the expense if the printer is used much. Canon's option to wait and purchase the extended warranty after the unit has been used a while is a good customer option, as opposed to having to decide before purchase or within a month; typical of many other manufacturers.

3. Repairs needed, see above, but were handled well by a local Canon authorized service center. Also, Canon requests and tracks direct customer feedback on all warranty service done for them, a good sign.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - More BANG for your Buck
I originally had a Brother MFC5100. I know, it was a glorified paperweight. So, when it broke, I knew that I did not want a Brother. So, I went to consumer reports. They rated the Pixma MP780 as a "Best Buy". I bought a Canon digital camera, so I knew that Canon had a great reputation. Little did I know how great this multi-function printer would be. It can do just about everything that a home office will need. I am completely satisfied with my purchase. I highly recommend this. On a final note, be sure to use the printing paper suggested. Use 17lb. paper, not the cheap 20lb paper. Although it will work on the 20lb paper, the quality will be slightly deminished.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Confusing Ink, but great printer.
I bought this printer a few weeks ago & was replacing a Canon Multipass which I used (abused) for two years. I used many different brands of ink cartridges with no difference in print quality. I do a LOT of plain paper printing for my business & homeschool & already have a seperate printer for photos and optical disk faces. My multipass died with me holding no less than 20 ink cartridges for it. Seeing that the 750 used different model number ink tanks, I ordered some of them to be sure I was well stocked & figured my $60 loss in ink was just the way it goes. Both ink cartridges seemed to be the same. Luckily, I saved the ink to see if I could find someone I knew who could use it. After HOURS of research on-line, I discovered that the BCI-3 series inks are interchangeable with the BCI-6 inks, UNLESS you want true arcival quality. Turns out the ink cart are exactly the same, with the exception of the KIND of ink in them.(and the price)

Pros: easy set up, two sided printing a BIG plus! Canon's great seperate ink carts.(my 5th Canon printer for this reason!) Printing in standard mode pretty much same as Multipass, in photo mode is exceptional. Document feeder a minor plus.
Excellent scanning options!!!

Cons: black print is weak IMO & confusion over ink cartridges may cost you. Less adgustment of ink usage in software than Multipass. I used to use "draft" mode (with some software tweaks) to print most of my stuff. Saved a lot on ink.

In conclusion I guess the new features on the scanner & the two sided printing outweigh the ink savings, but I wish I still had my Multipass. This was the best option to replace it for me.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Great All-In one except for wireless print server cap
Even thought this printer doesn't have wireless printer server capabilites.. I found a solution.. Netgear's WGPS606! It's one of the few PS that works with this printer even though it is not listed on their "official support page". However it may be difficult to get Netgear's product and your system configured due to poor documentation and support on Netgear's behalf. IF you configured your router for MAC filtering.. MAKE sure you enter both the wired and wireless MAC address for the Netgear router. It's not documented well, but that is how you can get PC's with wireless cards to print to your Canon MP780 via the Netgear Print Server. Enjoy!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Printer setup
Pixma was easiest printer ever purchased, to set up and get started. All functions are easy to understand, easy to perform. PDF manual easy to use also. Did have to purchase the 2.0 port cable at Radio Shack $29.99. Quality of printing is excellent, both documents & photos. Beyond my expectations and exceeds performance of previous Canon Multipass C755. Faxing, scanning ability is awesome. Flatbed & ADF all works as required. Printer well worth the money paid.
