Looks great, prints badly
I have had this printer for a little more than 2 years now. Its a great looker as others have mentioned, and its low profile is perhaps the best in the all-in-one segment. It will fax well. The included software is OK. But it is a dog at printing. I've replaced the black cartridge numerous times, and I only print perhaps 15 pages a month! Sometimes, I replaced the cartridge twice in a month; and even then it has streaking issues.
The real cost of ownership of this printer is unaffordably high. I'd say stay cvlear of it until a better one comes out of Brother's design team.

Buy a Brother = buy an extended warranty through someone else
Bought this while I was a college student and it lasted like a champ for about a year and a half. Then I got the dreaded error 41 message (bad print head). Called Brother and was asked if I use OEM ink or not. I said sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. Well luckily there was a recall on the print head but since it wasn't still under the manufacturer's warranty, I'd have to take it to a service center. Only one was even close to me and their hours were 8-4 M-F. So I had to take off work to drop it off and pick it up. They had it for over a week because they replaced the print head with a new one, only to find out it was defective and we had to wait for Brother to send another one to them. Got my machine back finally and it worked fine for 3.5 months then had the error 41 again. Called Brother and was told to take it up with the repair center. Well they only warrant their work for 60 days. Now it's a piece of junk. Bought another Brother machine - but bought it at Best Buy with a 3 year full replacement warranty. I know it will break within that time.

Worked for 1 year, was repaired, died 1 year later but Brother sent new printer!
I bought this machine 2 years ago, 1 year later the dreaded Error41 appeared (print head needs to be replaced), and it was replaced under warranty at no cost. Almost 1 year to the day later the same thing happened. I contacted via email Brother support. After talking with two very nice support persons on the phone, they agreed to send me a replacement printer, a new but cheaper Model 210C, which I just received, and I will send them back the broken MFC4420C. So I can't complain about their warranty service, however the machine itself has a few good marks, and some very bad ones. It self-cleans itself every time it starts up and takes forever. Print clarity constantly degrades so you have to clean it a lot. It's noisy, it smudges the edges of the pages quite a lot, it doesn't recognize new print cartridges when you insert them sometimes, it tells you the print cartridge is empty when there's quite a bit of ink left, it sucks ink like mad, and after two print head failures I swore I'd never buy a Brother again. So I purchased a new Epson Stylus CX5800F for $179 less $60 mail-in rebate. Much better construction and modern, not flimsy, prints good, but the copy function is very faint, very slow, and no way to adjust, so it's going back to CompUSA. I'll probably keep the replacement Model 210C Brother sent me as it's under warranty and it was "free," but I expect the same issues, sucking too much ink, self-cleaning every time you start it up, smudged pages, but it should copy and print ok, as did my MFC4420C. My recommendation - buy an HP, and forget Brother. Except for the fact that they sent me a new printer to replace my broken one, I'd never purchase a Brother product again. However, in fairness, my wife liked the copy and fax function of the MFC4420C because it was easy to use and the copies came out and looked good.
