Rating: - OK if you're into electronic drum kits...
As the other reviewer said, this is definitely not for the "purist" or anyone else who doesn't want to hear even more schmarmy versions of songs that, while great, tend toward the schmarmy. Great selection, but I couldn't take the same-sound, electronica organ backup for every cut. I much prefer "Classic Country: Great Story Songs" from Time Life. Just my $.02.
Rating: - Great Classic Country Selections
This hard-to-find set of country songs has a good selection from the 1960s and 1970s. If you like that era and don't want to invest a lot of money in CDs by individual artists, this is a good choice. Unlike some country classic selections, it is not limited to songs produced by one company. There are plenty of great "somebody done somebody wrong songs." Several songs made the rock or pop charts (such as Skeeter Davis' "The End of the World") or run counter to the stereotype of country music as catering to the narrow-minded (Henson Cargill's version of "Skip a Rope"). Purists will not like the fact that all but two of the 36 songs are studio re-recordings. However, that does improve the sound quality and it's hard to see that any of the singers have lost much over the years. A more serious flaw is that the instruments seem to lack character, so this is geared more toward those who focus on the vocals. If you're more interested in original recordings, you may prefer something like Columbia's Country Classics Volume 3 --Americana.
