Ives Plays Ives / Record # 4 in 'Charles Ives, the 100th Anniversary'

from: Composers Recordings

: essential recording:In his lifetime, maverick composer Charles Ives entered the recording studio only four times, mostly to hear (and tinker with) his works in progress. He ended up doing 42 takes of 17 different pieces on the piano, all recorded between 1933 and 1943: everything from snippets of the unfinished Emerson Concerto to his rousing wartime anthem 'They Are There!' It's a varied lot, to say the least, but now we have his complete recordings on one CD. The sound quality isn't great and you can easily hear how frustrated ...

The Hugo Wolf Society - The Complete Edition 1931-1938

from: EMI Int'l

: :EMI's 'society' subscription editions in the 1930s yielded a wealth of recordings long considered gramophone classics, such as the present collection of roughly half of Hugo Wolf's lieder output. Each song occupies its own specific world, due to Wolf's resourceful word setting and his avoidance of anything generic. In turn, the performers illuminate each song's felicities with effortless authority, and they avoid overpointing or enacting. Full texts and translations are included. Ernest Newman's penetrating annotations for the original 78 albums, reprinted in EMI's 1981 LP reissue, are absent. --Jed Distler

Rubinstein Collection, Vol. 40

from: RCA

: :Szeryng and Rubinstein are splendid partners in these Beethoven Violin Sonatas recorded in 1958 and 1961. Szeryng's handsome, varied tone, with its quick vibrato, was a fine foil for Rubinstein's equally varied keyboard touch and mastery of color. And with an outsized personality like Rubinstein at the piano, the instruments are true equals. Both artists often left the impression of underinterpreting masterpieces, perhaps because they never subordinated main musical lines to local detail. But they never ignored detail, either, as we hear in these sonatas, where numerous little felicities of tonal ...

Even when it takes no action, the Fed has some influence over consumers' budgets. Here's how the Fed's announcement affects both borrowers and savers.

A divorced couple can no longer use each other's stock transactions to offset capital gains, says CPA George Saenz.

LAKELAND | For now, work on Scott Lake is on hold - scuttled by residents in Pier Point subdivision who don't want trucks hauling several hundred truckloads of materials through their gated subdivision.

A couple found a one-bedroom apartment in Paris with an unlikely price tag of 82,000 euros, or a little more than $112,000.

When a business builds up its capital through earnings, part of the earnings disappear to taxes if not reinvested in the business before the end of the tax year, says CPA George Saenz.
