Try Whistling This
: :Neil Finn's solo debut carries much the same style and tone of his work with Crowded House--the intimate vocal delivery, the undeniably intelligent pop approach. What Try Whistling This lacks is a couple of cuts to break up the tastefulness that washes over everything; there's no noise like 'Locked Out,' no full-on heartbreak like 'Better Be Home Soon.' That's no reason for fans of the singer/songwriter not to buy this, but it's hard to see how it'll win many new listeners over to this occasional genius's side. --Rickey Wright

The Best of the Vines
:Album Description:UK pressing of the 2008 compilation by the Australian Alternative rockers featuring one bonus track: Fuck The World'. The Vines' story begins in much the same way as does any band's - young guys with a love for loud guitars and fast food pooling their talent and enthusiasm, paying their dues, and going on to earn their time in the spotlight. What sets the Vines apart is their stunning debut, and throughout a mind-blowing rocket ride to stardom and back to Earth, their ability to remain focused on the art of creating ...

Darkroom
:Album Description:In 1980 the Angels set their sights on the rest of the world - the Angels signed a five year deal with CBS/Epic world wide and released 'Dark Room', more hard driving, energetic rock with apocalyptic lyrics - 'No Secrets', 'Face The Day'. To avoid confusion with a similarly named group, for the rest of the world they changed their name to Angel City. They hit the world stages with almost the impact of AC/DC. Legend has it they were kicked off a Kinks tour for being 'too good', and that they ...

Since I Left You
: :The Avalanches are a much-feted six-man crew of sample addicts from Australia whose debut album, Since I Left You, is a bargain-bin vinyl throwback to the Daisy Age. This album is constructed like a mix tape and calculated to tweak the dance floor. Snatches of familiar rhythms bubble up throughout, giving the record a comfortable lived-in feel but also betraying the fact that the group hasn't dug very far through the crates to source their raw material. There's little doubt that this kind of sample reconstruction has become standard fare for retrogressive adolescents ...

One All
: :The 12 tracks on One All proffer a more organic, rougher-hewn take on Neil Finn's solid classicism. While Crowded House's populist folk-pop tugged as many purse-strings as it did hearts, Finn's solo career has been characterized by nothing more strident than the soft shuffle of gentle understatement--as if the antipodean troubadour feared his former muse would be insulted by any attempts to out-pop the relentlessly tuneful House. Not that this follow-up to 1998's patchy solo debut, Try Whistling This, is in any way underwhelming. The swirling effects and treated guitars of 'Rest of ...
