No Time for Sergeants

starring: Andy Griffith, Nick Adams, Don Knotts, Murray Hamilton, Howard Smith
directed by: Mervyn LeRoy

: :Andy Griffith burst to stardom with this surprisingly funny film adaptation of the Broadway comedy (by, of all people, Ira Levin of Rosemary's Baby fame). Griffith plays a hillbilly who is drafted into the army where, among other things, he has to wear shoes regularly for the first time. Griffith brings an engaging glee to the role of this likable bumpkin, whose happy-go-lucky demeanor is impervious to insult. Ask him to clean the latrines and he rigs the ...

Centennial Vols 1-12

starring: William Atherton, Raymond Burr, Barbara Carrera, Richard Chamberlain, Robert Conrad
directed by: Harry Falk, Bernard McEveety (II), Paul Krasny

: :A remarkably ambitious and engrossing project, this 1978 television miniseries ran 26-and-a-half hours, cost a then-enormous $25 million, and involved 4 directors, 5 cinematographers, and somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 speaking parts. Based on James Michener's panoramic bestseller about the settling of the American West--as reflected in the history of a fictional town called Centennial, Colorado--the story begins in the late 18th century and ends with a typical 20th century conflict over land usage. Centennial, however, largely ...

Hearts of the West

starring: Jeff Bridges, Andy Griffith, Donald Pleasence, Blythe Danner, Alan Arkin
directed by: Howard Zieff

: :Movies about the movies are a particularly rich vein, especially in comedies. No one understands just how ridiculous Hollywood is like the people who work there. This film is an affectionate behind-the-scenes story about a bumpkin (Jeff Bridges) who moves to Hollywood in the 1930s with visions of a career penning the kind of Westerns he loves to watch, especially the ones starring his favorite Western star (Andy Griffith). Instead, through a series of mishaps, he becomes an ...

Sales of semiconductors in November indicate that consumer products such as LCD (liquid crystal display) TVs, digital music players, and other devices sold well during the holidays, the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) said Monday.

November chip sales rose 2.3 percent year-on-year to $23.1 billion, the SIA said.

Unit demand has far outpaced last year. But falling chip prices have hurt industry revenue, the chip association said. For example, DRAM (dynamic RAM) bit shipments grew 25 percent in the three months through mid-December, but average selling prices have declined 20 percent over the same period.

The association also noted that rising energy prices and concerns about the sub-prime lending issue in the U.S. do not appear to have had a significant impact on consumer spending for the holidays, the SIA said. The group reiterated its forecast that worldwide semiconductor sales will reach a new record in 2007. But it will take a stronger than expected December selling season to reach the 3.8 percent growth goal the group had forecast earlier this year, the SIA said.

Investment banking firm Credit Suisse was not as optimistic as the SIA.

The November data was below normal seasonal trends, noted analyst John Pitzer, in a report on Monday. Even if December reaches its normal seasonal growth, 2007 industry revenue will only reach $255.7 billion, up 3.2 percent over last year. The growth percentage would fall short of the SIA's 3.8 percent target.

The slow November prompted Credit Suisse to lower its 2008 chip industry revenue forecast to 9.4 percent year-on-year growth, down from a previous target of 13 percent.
