Feather on the Breath of God
from: Hyperion UK
: essential recording:This is the record that started the Hildegard craze back in 1982--and you need only listen to Emma Kirkby glide and soar through Columba aspexit (the opening hymn) to understand why. Gothic Voices performs the music very simply, either alternating soloists and unison choir over a drone or using a single unaccompanied voice. The singers render Hildegard's extravagant poetic imagery and melody not with the rhythmically fluid, ecstatic approach favored by Sequentia, but with equalist rhythm and a calm, meditative quality. On the whole, Parrott and his ensemble make a good case for both one-per-part practice and their own performances. Once the ear adjusts, the balance is excellent: the vocal parts don't dominate the orchestra (as many listeners accustomed to a chorus expect); they are equal partners with it--which suits Bach's ...

The Promise of Ages : A Christmas Collection
from: Sony
: :No one has recorded more innovative Christmas anthologies than Andrew Parrott--and this disc is no exception. The Promise of Ages presents a collection of wonderful seasonal music arranged for women's voices (all arrangements were either made or sanctioned by the composers). The selection includes 15th-century English works such as 'There is no rose of swych vertu'; traditional tunes both genuine ('Deck the Halls' in an 18th-century Welsh arrangement for harp) and fake (J. J. Niles's 'I Wonder as I Wander' and 'Lullay, thou little tiny child'); rollicking Irish dance tunes; and ...
