Shirley Temple - Little Darling Pack (Little Miss Marker/Now and Forever/The Runt Page)

starring: Adolphe Menjou, Dorothy Dell, Charles Bickford, Shirley Temple, Lynne Overman
directed by: Alexander Hall, Henry Hathaway, Ray Nazarro

: :Shirley Temple's superstardom in the 1930s was associated with Twentieth Century Fox, but before Fox locked her down she made the two films for Paramount bundled here. It was 1934, her breakthrough year, and these pictures are not quite yet the showcase vehicles Fox would assemble for their pint-sized meal ticket. In Little Miss Marker, Shirley comes under the wing of Sorrowful Jones (Adolphe Menjou in good form), as Damon Runyon's world of bookies and gamblers and soft-hearted gangsters comes to life around her. It's a heartstring-tugger of an expert kind; ...

Down to Earth

starring: Rita Hayworth, Larry Parks, Marc Platt, Roland Culver, James Gleason
directed by: Alexander Hall

: :In 1946 Columbia knew it had all the makings of a blockbuster by reworking the 'Here Comes Mr. Jordan' theme along with teaming up some of the original cast members with Hollywood's brightest star Rita Hayworth. The prospects might have been too promising as they enabled Hayworth's agents at the William Morris company to renegotiate her already lucrative studio contract. In DOWN TO EARTH Rita Hayworth's talents are absolutely show-stopping and with the release of this film it's easy to see why she earned the reputation as the Silver Screen's ...

Once Upon a Time

starring: Cary Grant, Janet Blair, James Gleason, Ted Donaldson, William Demarest
directed by: Alexander Hall

: :Cary Grant is, irrefutably, the greatest movie star of all time. For evidence, take a look at Once Upon a Time, an airy soufflé of a movie about a once-hot Broadway producer named Jerry Flynn (Grant), now on a cold streak, who discovers a young orphan boy with a dancing caterpillar. Convinced this will save his theater from being reclaimed by the bank, Flynn skillfully turns the caterpillar into a media sensation and becomes a substitute father for the boy--but he plans to sell the caterpillar to the highest bidder, even ...

Sales of semiconductors in November indicate that consumer products such as LCD (liquid crystal display) TVs, digital music players, and other devices sold well during the holidays, the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) said Monday.

November chip sales rose 2.3 percent year-on-year to $23.1 billion, the SIA said.

Unit demand has far outpaced last year. But falling chip prices have hurt industry revenue, the chip association said. For example, DRAM (dynamic RAM) bit shipments grew 25 percent in the three months through mid-December, but average selling prices have declined 20 percent over the same period.

The association also noted that rising energy prices and concerns about the sub-prime lending issue in the U.S. do not appear to have had a significant impact on consumer spending for the holidays, the SIA said. The group reiterated its forecast that worldwide semiconductor sales will reach a new record in 2007. But it will take a stronger than expected December selling season to reach the 3.8 percent growth goal the group had forecast earlier this year, the SIA said.

Investment banking firm Credit Suisse was not as optimistic as the SIA.

The November data was below normal seasonal trends, noted analyst John Pitzer, in a report on Monday. Even if December reaches its normal seasonal growth, 2007 industry revenue will only reach $255.7 billion, up 3.2 percent over last year. The growth percentage would fall short of the SIA's 3.8 percent target.

The slow November prompted Credit Suisse to lower its 2008 chip industry revenue forecast to 9.4 percent year-on-year growth, down from a previous target of 13 percent.
